‘~하곤 했다, ~이었다’라는 의미로 과거의 반복된 행동·습관이나 지속된 상태를 나타내며, ‘현재는 그렇지 않다’라는 의미가 내포되어 있다. 과거의 반복된 행동·습관을 나타낼 때는 would로 바꿔 쓸 수 있지만 과거의 상태를 나타낼 때는 would를 쓰지 않는다. 1) In the past, I used to play basketball a lot, but I don’t play very often now. (→ In the past, I would play basketball a lot, but I don’t play very often now.) 옛날에 나는 농구를 많이 하곤 했지만, 지금은 그렇게 자주 하지는 않는다. 2) There used to be a great Chinese restaurant near my house.
